        1. Actually when I make Chilli or a shepherds pie I wind up pulling everything out of the spice and tins cupboards and let my imagination run riot. Especially if I have no actual chilli powder in. I find a combination (to taste.) of smoked paprika, cumin and cayenne pepper plus a dash or two (or more if you like the taste) of worcester sauce can be just as good and that pinto beans can be a good substitute for kidney beans. In shepherds pie, using instant mash and some herbs such as rosemary and oregano can bring out the taste of leftover minced lamb. The packet mash is fab if you are challenged time wise and everyone is starving and waiting on dinner.
